A very important Maths Lesson.

Today we learnt about Euro Coins. Children will need to know by heart the following facts.

One Euro coin :

They have all the notes on the Maths study copybook. They have to study also how many coins (10c, 5c, 2c, 1c) make up a 50 euro cent coin.

What the Art Teacher would like.

Please for art lessons (on Fridays) give your child a cloth or canvas bag containing the following :

An old t-shirt or apron, black permanent marker, A3 drawing books, small packet of wet wipes, old towel/cloths, 1cm chisel brush, watercolours, empty yoghurt/noodle/plastic cups, 1 kartoncina (any colour but NOT black).

This might look confusing, but it's really easy.

On abacus page 8, children have four empty cards.

They have to fill out the cards with numbers that add up to 10. They can choose the numbers themselves.

On the study copybook there are some examples.

Ex

10 = 2 + 3 + 4 + 1

They can take out 10 fingers, then use their fingers to split the 10 between any 2/3/4 numbers.

We will do these sums again tomorrow :)

English Homework.

Today the children have homework from the Green Book. Page 1, Exercise 1. Numbers 6,  7, 8, 10, 12.

Leave numbers 9 and 11 out.

Children have to read the sentence, then look at the Pupil's Book, pages 4 and 5 and write the answer as such

Note that the children have to use capital letters in the beginning of names.

The Fruit Break.

As from this week, every day (we'll try to keep it every day) at 10.00, just after the second lesson, children will stop writing for a Fruit Break.

This is done to give more importance to the eating of fruit. Please ensure that your child brings one fruit a day to school. The fruit break will encourage children to eat more fruit, as children tend to copy habits from each other.

Testing Cam

Today's ICT lesson.

So, as you know, each child in our class has her own email address.



Today we tossed all our emails in a hat, and each child pulled out an e-mail address.



They had to send e-mails to each other, and some of them sent e-mails home as well...so I hope you're all opening your e-mail programs and replying...should be fun.



Here's how the children access their e-mail accounts.

• Open the http://www.skola.gov.mt/ website.


• Go on the webmail tab on top (where you can see the red postbox)


• In the box where @skola.gov.mt put your username...so now you have username@skola.gov.mt


• In the box next to it, put in your password.

• (*make sure you know your child's password, so you can keep tabs on their internet activity*)


• Click enter

Compose your email.

Children know the internet safety rules.

The most important things to remember are these

1. Always keep your password secret.


2. Always ask permission before using the internet.


3. Go on sites approved by your teacher and your parents.


4. Never open emails or send emails to people you don't know.


5. If you feel uncomfortable with any site, please close it immediately.

And to all parents out there....never leave your children alone while surfing the net. The net is the big world out there, there are all sorts of dangers, as well as educational and fun stuff. We should not keep them away from the world, but we must walk beside them to make sure they stay safe.

The Life Cycle of the Butterfly.

Today we did the life cycle of the butterfly and I showed the children these two videos, I skipped the first 30 seconds from the first one in class, but you can decide whether to show the first 30 seconds to your children (it shows two butterflies mating, nothing out of this world, but would have been hard for me to explain, as it's not a one to one situation).

doubles and halves.

Page 49 is the doubling machine.

Children need to find either the double or the half of the numbers, accordingly.

Page 49B children have to find doubles, sometimes of big numbers. They have the 'how to' notes on the Maths Study.

ex : Double 35

split into tens and units.

double 30 and double 5

60 + 10 = 70.

Most children know the doubles by rote anyway.

The Big Bell outing.

We had so much fun on this day! I encourage everybody who gets a chance to go to the Basilica bell tower, to do so, it's a marvellous experience. Our church has beautiful architecture, and one can appreciate the hard work of our forefathers at a time when machinery and technology was not as developed as today, if not non-existant.

Many thanks to Nathan's mum for arranging the outing. Thanks also to the mothers of Xylon, Aldair, Nevise, Naiomi and Brady...as well as Kryssa's nanna for helping us out.

Next week we are going to the Parish Church for an outing. I need some help, because we are going up the belfry (kampnar). I need about 5 parents to help me walk the children up the stairs and help me take care of them when we are near the bell. IF I don't have enough parents helping out, I'll leave this part of the outing out.

Toilet Training

A lot of children are asking me to go to the toilet soon after breaktime, or during lessons.

I take them to the toilet twice a day, I feel that should be enough. Sometimes I allow them to go as soon as explaination is over.

Please have a chat with your children, as time in the classroom is now very restricted.

Also, keep hygiene in mind. Make sure your children have tissues and wipes.

Sorry I haven't blogged for a few days, I was very busy with some stuff going on at school and at home it is virtually impossible, as I have 'some' decoration going on...

So... today's homework is on Maths 2.

Exercise 1 is pretty straight forward, children have to circle the smallest number and underline the largest number.

Exercise 2, they have to arrange the group of numbers from smallest- largest.

Exercise 3, they have to insert two 'in between' numbers

for example

Children have to insert a number larger than 18 and smaller than 45.

Also note that when there is a vowel before the last consonant, the last consonant gets doubled before adding -ing.

This is our last term together. I will emphasise more on corrections, keeping time during school work, giving marks, more compositions and comprehensions and writing in cursive.

Next year you will find Year four to be tougher, so I will try to gear up children as much as possible. Behaviour permitting of course.

Today we had so much fun doing a photostory about our Valletta outing. I think it (the video making) was a fun way to learn about our traditions. We didn't manage to finish, because unfortunately, there's always somebody who manages to waste us half hour out of every two....there's a few slides left. Bear with us, you'll see it tomorrow.

When you have three words starting with the same letter, and you have to put them in ABC order (alphabetical order) you have to look at the second letter.

This lesson was more of a revision, as all the work was done last term. Homework is on PCM Pages 41 and 41b.

Page 41 : Write the fraction. If one part out of four is shaded, you write 1/4

Page 41b : The same as 41 but with more fractions. Ex 1 out of 7....the same concept should be used.

The Football Board.

Getting children to read and browse newspapers is a great way to get them to read more. Especially if there is a topic in the papers that really interest them. This week's topic, football, really got a few boys going, they were reading together between lessons and during breaks, and discussing the topics. I hope to do a fashion week for the girls soon..(although I do have boys who love fashion and girls who love football too)

Spring.

Today we wrote a composition about Spring. First I showed the children a video with all things spring and fresh...they had to watch it 'silently'. While watching it, they had to list down words or draw things they liked from the video. Afterwards we discussed the topic and wrote a few pointers on the board. Each child wrote the paragraphs on her own. At home they have to write the composition neatly on the English Writing copybook and draw a picture. Thankyou.

Division Sums

These sums have been done to exhaustion this week. All children have grasped the concept, altough I would have liked it better if all of them knew the tables through and through.

Here is the kind of 'story sum' we are doing now:

30 marbles

(30 marbles shared between 5 boys)

30 ./. 5 = 6 marbles.

Dream Team...first movie

This is one of the better turned out movies...enjoy. Children were very excited to speak in English on camera. Enjoy.

After 'promising' myself to 'never again' to do a day jam packed with activities...well I i broke the promise. Children were as hyper as ever, they were too excited to be out of uniform for a day...well most of them.

So we started the day by reading the book :

Then we wrote on our 'Stories' scrapbook about this story. It was fun recording the children, even though it was frustrating stopping and starting about a million times.

As a conversation lesson, I videoed the children talking about football (in English). These videos need to be heavily edited...you really don't want to see children fighting and acting silly in the background.

We also made a board full of newspaper cuttings, read a few of them and put them up according to the different teams.

I really really wanted to do a penalty shootout, but time ran out. We shall do it next week.

Division Sums.

This week we are 'growing up' a little and we're starting to do division sums.

Division sums are dead easy, we do them on a single line. All the children have to do is study the multiplication tables real hard.

This site has got LOADS of interactive games regarding multiplication sums.

That will be good training for you for when you get to do division.

How easy is dividing?

ex 18 ./. 3

We start saying the X3 table until we hit 18.

so 6 X 3 = 18

therefore 18 divided by 3 = 6.

Football!!!

My class is full of promising young footballers. So, one of our literacy books is this :

I told the children that next Tuesday we shall be having a football-themed day. They are to come in their P.E kits or their football gears. No shinguards please. IF it's cold, they can wear a poloneck under the football kit or wear a tracksuit over it. I also asked them to look for newspaper cuttings regarding football, please look in the Sunday papers as there will be quite a lot of football coverage.

We shall write about this book, talk about favourite players, talk about training, the roles of managers and coaches, famous teams etc...I will also show them video clips of famous players doing their magic on the football pitch, as well as football funny moments. I will post these movies here after the lesson, so you can talk about the lesson with your children.

Yesterday's outing.

So yesterday, blessed with a magnificent sun, we set off to Valletta, our capital city.

Our first stop was just outside Valletta, to the public library. We were shown round the different sections. We learnt two new words 'reference' and 'Melitensia'.

Here we are being shown the reference section. Hush!! Be quiet! There are people studying....




Run up the hill to Hastings Gardens in Valletta...for a little bit of lunch under the shade. Bliss.



Off to the Traditional Arts and Crafts museum nearby to meet some people from another era.

Back to hastings gardens for some fun. Look at all those happy faces!



Walking back on the bridge above City Gate, some eagle eyes spotted our town from afar....'Look Miss! It's the hospital!'






Passed through St.James'Cavalier, and we saw an modern sculpture exhibition about Urbanisation. Very interesting and thought provoking.



Whoa! Barrakka Gardens. Packed with tourists and excited school children. This week we touched the war subject, so what a better view to end our journey...Now we can see where the Great Siege happend and where the crippled SS Ohio entered...Children were very excited to see something they watched on a very old movie.



There you have it...the most beautiful.

Next week we'll be doing some work connected with this outing. So stay tuned.
I did not give any homework, poor children were too tired to take any more homework.

Week 2 Day 2. The Maths lesson.

Today we did some sums on the interactive whiteboard.

There are only a couple of pupils who aren't fluent in these sums, we still have another couple of days doing them. Hopefully by Friday there won't be any problems with anybody.

Next week we are doing division sums. Would be good if you revised the multiplication tables at home.

Book Club

On the left hand side of this blog, I will add a list of books I own. I have loads of books I need to put on my virtual shelf.
