Solid Shapes.

Here is a good explaination for solid shapes. Solid shapes are not just a Maths thing, they are everywhere around us. Would be good if children learn now to find them in their every day life.

Homework

Is on Maths 1.

Children have to write the shape of the object described.

For example

What shape is a clown's hat?
Answer : A cone.

They Also have a handout called 'Hiding'. They have to work out Ex 1 and 2 on the English Comp copybook.
For exercise 1, they have to fill in with a word from the passage. For exercise 2 they have to copy only the 'true' (good) sentences.

Some children have the book called 'Jolly Hungry Jack' or 'The Enormous Turnip' for reading in their bags. They are to bring the book with them tomorrow.

Malti
Tajthom ħendawt jisimha 'Stedina'. Iridu jaħdmu eż 1 biss, fuq il-pitazz tat-taħriġ.

Oxford Reading Tree Online

I'm sure most of the children came home all excited about the interactive software we are using at school.

On the left hand side, there are two boxes for the 'username' and 'password'. Most of the children know how to input these by heart now. I won't publish the username and password (for which the school has paid for) on this blog, for obvious reasons, but you can find them on your children's email address.

Please start from 'reception'. Do not use Year 1 and Year 2 yet.

Thanks and Enjoy!

L-Aħħar Bidwi...

Iċċekjaw l-email inbox tat-tfal għax bgħattilhom il-kollegament (link) biex inizzlu mp3 tal-kanzunetta li kantaw huma stess. :)

Grazzi.

(jew inkella ibgħatu pendrive/cd l-iskola u ntihielkom xorta)

Today's Homework.

Children have study list 4 in their English Study copybook. Please study this a little bit every day, that's how you get the best results.

On the Maths squares copybook, they have to draw lines according to the measurments given. This time the lines are vertical.

Children have to get a 1 metre length (not more, not less) of string or ribbon, to use for a measuring exercise.

Way Ahead Workbook, pages 16, 17, 18.

On their Maltese composition they have a few sentences, which they have to copy correctly on a neat piece of paper.

I have a copy of 'L-Aħħar Bidwi f'Wied il-Għasel' on my drive, sung by the children. They will do a performance in front of teachers who are visiting our school for the Comenius project. If you want a copy of this recording, please send the pen-drive to school, so your child can practise over the weekend. Many thanks.

Measuring.

Here is what we are doing at the moment. It's very important that children learn how to use measuring tools properly.

Ġietni idea...

Minn għada ser nibda nistaqsi lit-tfal ituni suġġett fuq xiex nibbloggja...xi annimal, grupp favorit, pajjiz, tim tal-futbol, kartuns ... li jħobbu. Jien nagħmel naqra riċerka bl-għajnuna tagħhom u nitfa' artiklu fuq hawn.

Dan mhux għat-tfal biss, jekk tridu tkunu tafu xi ħaġa intom ... ibgħatu kumment jew email u jkollna artiklu fuq x' niddiskutu hawn. Ġietni idea wkoll fuq l-ewwel lezzjoni tat-tisjir li nagħmlu. Dan inħobb nagħmlu meta jkolli l-lezzjoni tat-tisjir jew dwar l-ikel tajjeb għas-saħħa. Jekk tixtiequ lit-tfal jitgħallmu xi tisjir ġdid (eż : ikel Malti, insalata tal-frott, smoothies u milkshakes eċċ)... għiduli.

Adding Elevens

This was the lesson I wanted to broadcast live, but here's a  recording of what we did. I apologise for the bad audio in the video.

Here is a handout which you can do as extra work :

Adding Elevens.

Xogħol għall-Erbgħa, 4 ta' Novembru.

Fuq il-Project book tal-iStudji Soċjali għandhom iwaħħlu l-ħendawt li nħadmet fil-klassi, iwaħħlu l-Bronja (għandhom ħendawt tagħha wkoll) u jsibu xi stampi/ ipinġu fuq Ħaġar Qim u l-Mitħna tax-Xarolla.

Biex tifhmu aħjar fejn morna, HAWN issibu xi nformazzjoni fuq iż-Żurrieq, u msemmija l-Mitħna ( u l-Katakombi li hemm biswitha).

U HAWN issib xi nformazzjoni fuq Ħaġar Qim.

Dan hu filmat fuq dan it-Tempju megalitiku.

Ikun tajjeb kieku ssibu ħin u tmorru mat-tfal, speċjalment jekk għandkom tfal li qegħdin fl-ewwel sena tas-sekondarja. Dawk li jkollhom sħubija fil-Heritage Malta jkollhom prezzijiet specjali.

Il-Ħarġa t'Għada.

Għada sejrin naraw il-Mitħna tax-Xarolla u wara sejrin Ħaġar Qim. Nitloblkom tibgħatuhom bl-uniformi puliti u bil-basket il-Kbir kif ukoll wieħed żgħir bl-ikel ġo fih. Ħelu jistgħu jġibu pakkett wieħed biss. Tibgħatux cikkulati għax idubu u jagħmlu straġi.

Il-Lampa

Din hi l-lezzjoni tal-Malti.
It-tfal għandhom jaqraw l-istorja fuq id-Denfil paġni 14 u 15, u jwieġbu l-mistoqsijiet fuq il-pitazz tat-taħriġ.

Today's Maths Lesson.

I think this explains it all. Done with Smartboard software. :)

Homework exercise on Maths copybook 2.

For the Weekend.

It-tfal għandhom lista ta' kliem bil-Malti x'jistudjaw għad-dettat nhar it-Tnejn. Għandhom il-ġranet tal-ġimgħa u l-istaguni. Ħafna minnhom jafuhom diga'.

Għandhom ukoll ħendawt fil-flat file abjad.

Handwriting : This week we have the letters that go down like a monkey's tail.

Abacus Textbook : Page 3. Do not draw the pictures, just write the sums on Copybook 1.

Abacus workbook page 14. The children worked the sums at school, or most of them. Now they have to colour the shapes according to the answers.
Answer 10 : Green
Answer 5 : Brown
All the other answers : Blue

Ix-xogħol tal-lum.

Studji Soċjali : Nies li jgħinuna. Ikkopjaw dawk is-sentenzi irrigati biss fuq Id-Dinja Tiegħi. Waħħlu xi stampi li għandhom x'jaqsmu. Dan ix-xogħol hu għal nhar it-Tnejn ħalli ntikom ċans issibu l-istampi.

English Dictation : Children have word list 2 on the English Study copybook. English Dictations are on Thursdays.

Maltese Dictation will be on Mondays. List will be given tomorrow.

Il-Healthy Breakfast.

Illum kif tafu konna l-healthy breakfast. It-tfal kielu ċereali li fihom anqas zokkor, u ħadu jowgart ukoll.

Ixxukkjajt ruħi kif minn klassi ta' għoxrin, sebgha
biss jieħdu kolazjon kif suppost. Is-sebgha li jieħdu, fil-maġġoranza jieħdu ċereali taċ-ċikkulata.

Mhux ta' b'xejn li meta ddoqq il-qanpiena tal-brejk ikunu jridu jibilgħuh il-ħobż.

Hafna tfal li jkunu fuq stonku vojt ma jikkonċentrawx. Hemm bżonn li jiġu l-iskola b'xi ħaġa sustanzjuża ġo fihom. Ċereali, ħobż mixwi, frotta...ttuhomx kejkijiet u gallettini għax ħafna zokkor iraqqadhom.

Għada ser nagħmlu il-fruit break, nispera li nara aktar tfal bil-frott fil-basket. Jistgħu jġibu jowgart (mhux minn dawk tal-ismarties jew mimlijin zokkor). Min iġib frotta/ħaxix/jowgart ser jieħu stilla fuq iċ-ċart tal-frott.

Today is Wednesday.

So, as always, we don't give homework. I hope you go for a nice walk, a nice drive, spend time with your parents and loved ones. Maybe kick a ball or ride a bike. Fly a kite or walk your dog.

Tomorrow we have dictation. Most of you are prepared. Do spend a few minutes going over the List 1, which is on the English Study Copybook.

Also, tomorrow we are having A Healthy Breakfast, so please come to school smart in your uniform. Thankyou :)

Maths : Counting Back.

Today we had some activity in the classroom.
Each group was given a 'whiteboard', a marker, a dice, and a set of cards showing from 10-20.

Each member of the group had to turn over one card, write the number on the whiteboard.

Then they roll the dice, and they minus that number from the big one.

Then we take out fingers showing the amount shown on the dice, and we count back from the big number.

ex 16 - 9 = 7
( 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7)

For homework they have some counting back sums.

Watch This!!

Here is the cartoon we watched in class. We have the work on the My Stories Project Book. For homework, you have to draw the picture of the monster, or something from the story on the My Stories project book. Don't worry if your drawing is not too good, mine are not that good either :)

I will post some of your drawings next week.

Not now, Bernard.

Today we are going to read this fantastic book in class.

I read the story for you, in case you want to listen to it again.

Wara li taraw il- Powerpoint li poġġejtilkom fil-post ta' qabel din, tistgħu taħdmu MaltiManija g u o paġna 7.

Ħafna mit-tfal ma kinux jafu x'inhu vulkan, x'inhi l-Etna, xi tkun Belt Kapitali, id-differenza bejn pajjiz u belt...nixtieqkom jekk għandkom Atlas id-dar uruhom ftit, u tkellmu magħhom.

Kelma b'Oħra.

Illum fuq id-Denfil qrajna l-istorja li hemm fuq paġna 13. Fuq il-pitazz issa mxejna 'l quddiem. Fejn qabel kienu jimlew il-vojt, issa jridu jibdew iwieġbu. Għal bidu ser nibdielhom it-tweġiba jien, imma 'l quddiem ser ikollhom ifittxuha huma.

Rajna dan il-vidjo waqt li qrajna l-istorja.

Mistoqsijiet kienu dawn :

1) X'jisimha l-istorja? 2) X'kien qed jagħmel it-tifel?

Handwriting practise.

I found a good site that will enable you to print worksheets which will help your child to write in cursive writing.

The yellow dot on each worksheet will show you where the letter should start.

Choose the letters you want to practise, then click 'Make worksheet'. You will see the worksheet in a few seconds.

Then
File > Print :)

Here is a handout to practise the letter k.

Otto's Family.

I've given the children four sheets of paper which are going to become our first book.

They are to stick the pages from 'Otto's Family' onto these pages, according to the page numbers.

Title page (no pictures, just writing and drawing)

Page 1 : Father

Page 2 : Mother

Page 3 : Brother

Page 4 : Sister

Page 5 : Grandma

Page 6: Grandpa.

We will write on these books accordingly during our English writing sessions.

A very important Maths Lesson.

Today we learnt about Euro Coins. Children will need to know by heart the following facts.

One Euro coin :

Maths Homework.

This might look confusing, but it's really easy.

On abacus page 8, children have four empty cards.

They have to fill out the cards with numbers that add up to 10. They can choose the numbers themselves.

On the study copybook there are some examples.

Ex

10 = 2 + 3 + 4 + 1

They can take out 10 fingers, then use their fingers to split the 10 between any 2/3/4 numbers.

l l l l l l l l l l
       3  + 3 + 4 = 10

We will do these sums again tomorrow :)

English Homework.

Today the children have homework from the Green Book. Page 1, Exercise 1. Numbers 6,  7, 8, 10, 12.
Leave numbers 9 and 11 out.

Children have to read the sentence, then look at the Pupil's Book, pages 4 and 5 and write the answer as such

6) This man is a funny clown.
6) It is Tico.

Note that the children have to use capital letters in the beginning of names.

TOMORROW....

Is P.E day.
Do not forget to come with your P.E kit. White shorts and t-shirt, white socks, white shoes.

Maths Lesson.

Today we had a lesson about tens and ones (units). Please see the maths study copybook for the notes. Homework is from the Abacus Workbook pages 5 and 6.

Also, you can do this handout for extra work.

The Fruit Break.

As from this week, every day (we'll try to keep it every day) at 10.00, just after the second lesson, children will stop writing for a Fruit Break.
This is done to give more importance to the eating of fruit. Please ensure that your child brings one fruit a day to school. The fruit break will encourage children to eat more fruit, as children tend to copy habits from each other.

Our Class on PBS news.

Click here to watch our class, my fabulous children on the news. Big well done to all of you. The children didn't have much briefing on what to say, as you all know, I sent you all an e-mail to behave and smile, and talk nicely. You outdid all my expectations. Am so proud of you. Monday's a treat day for you all. (erm...I don' t mean no homework or no lessons....just something nice for you in store)
Thanks a lot xxx You are the best class in the world.

This Weekend's Homework.

This weekend, the homework's really easy.

From way ahead :

Put the words in ABC order.

If you want to practise more on ABC order, here's a funky game. You have to whack the moles until you get all the Alphabet, one after the other.

It's HERE

Then you have Pete and Polly. Pete and Polly need to be coloured in. Follow the instructions, it's easy.

His and Her.

His = things that belong to a boy.
Her = things that belong to a girl.

Maths homework.

On your PCM, pages 1 and 2. If you get confused, follow the number chart on the first page.

Handwriting.

Write NEATLY...and slowly.
If you want to practise more of the same letters on the copybook, I won't mind at all :)

Buy the papers tomorrow and do watch the news tonight.... :)

Today's ICT lesson.

So, as you know, each child in our class has her own email address.

Today we tossed all our emails in a hat, and each child pulled out an e-mail address.

They had to send e-mails to each other, and some of them sent e-mails home as well...so I hope you're all opening your e-mail programs and replying...should be fun.

Here's how the children access their e-mail accounts.

  • Open the http://www.skola.gov.mt/ website.

Children know the internet safety rules.

The most important things to remember are these

  1. Always keep your password secret.

  2. Always ask permission before using the internet.

  3. Go on sites approved by your teacher and your parents.

  4. Never open emails or send emails to people you don't know.

  5. If you feel uncomfortable with any site, please close it immediately.

And to all parents out there....never leave your children alone while surfing the net. The net is the big world out there, there are all sorts of dangers, as well as educational and fun stuff. We should not keep them away from the world, but we must walk beside them to make sure they stay safe.

Enjoy!!

The Life Cycle of the Butterfly.

Today we did the life cycle of the butterfly and I showed the children these two videos, I skipped the first 30 seconds from the first one in class, but you can decide whether to show the first 30 seconds to your children (it shows two butterflies mating, nothing out of this world, but would have been hard for me to explain, as it's not a one to one situation).

As for the rest, they were mesmerised....

And this one....

Maths Homework

Pages 49 and 49 B of the PhotoCopyMasters (PCM)

doubles and halves.

Page 49 is the doubling machine.

Children need to find either the double or the half of the numbers, accordingly.

Page 49B children have to find doubles, sometimes of big numbers. They have the 'how to' notes on the Maths Study.

ex : Double 35

split into tens and units.

double 30 and double 5

60 + 10 = 70.

Most children know the doubles by rote anyway.

English Homework

We are now closing up chapter 1 7, Tomorrow we start chapter 18. I can't believe the year is almost over.

Oxford Reading Tree

We have been given access to this website, which has a lot of English exercises, stories and games. The children have the username and password written in their diaries, if you can't find it for any reason, kindly send me an email and I will email it back to you.

The Big Bell outing.

We had so much fun on this day! I encourage everybody who gets a chance to go to the Basilica bell tower, to do so, it's a marvellous experience. Our church has beautiful architecture, and one can appreciate the hard work of our forefathers at a time when machinery and technology was not as developed as today, if not non-existant.

Many thanks to Nathan's mum for arranging the outing. Thanks also to the mothers of Xylon, Aldair, Nevise, Naiomi and Brady...as well as Kryssa's nanna for helping us out.

Here is a video we made for the day (the IT project, which will be shown to all the schools of Malta)

Today's Notes.

Homework : Abacus page 12, 13, 14.
We are doing doubles. Please study the doubles on the Maths Study copybook.

Handout : Intervista mal-Mama'.

Next week we are going to the Parish Church for an outing. I need some help, because we are going up the belfry (kampnar). I need about 5 parents to help me walk the children up the stairs and help me take care of them when we are near the bell. IF I don't have enough parents helping out, I'll leave this part of the outing out.

Il-Ġimgħa d-dieħla, nhar it-Tlieta 12 ta' Mejju, ser ikollna ħarġa lejn il-Knisja l-Kbira. Għandi bżonn ftit ġenituri voluntiera biex jiġu magħna, peress li għandna l-permess mill-prepostu biex nitilgħu ħdejn il-Qanpiena storika tagħna. Minħabba li hemm mitt tarġa, għandi bżonn l-għajnuna ta' xi ħames adulti. Jekk ma jkollix biżżejjed nies kbar, din il-parti tal-ħarġa ma ssirx. Grazzi.

Please email me on claudine.slater@educ.gov.mt with your questions or comments. Thanks.
You can also leave a comment here on this blog, I will do my best to answer you.

Toilet Training

A lot of children are asking me to go to the toilet soon after breaktime, or during lessons.

I take them to the toilet twice a day, I feel that should be enough. Sometimes I allow them to go as soon as explaination is over.

Please have a chat with your children, as time in the classroom is now very restricted.

Also, keep hygiene in mind. Make sure your children have tissues and wipes.

Ir-Regoli tal-Malti.

Qed ninnota ħafna ġenituri jgħinu lil uliedhom fix-xogħol tad-dar. Dan hu ġest sabiħ ħafna, u nixtieq li l-ġenituri kollha jagħtu kas dak li jagħmlu t-tfal fil-pitazzi tagħhom.
Nara wkoll pero', ħafna użu tal-Malti ħażin, per eżempju ħafna taħwid fir-regoli taż-żewġ vokali ħdejn xulxin.
Il-Vokali taqa' biss meta tkun vokali tal-leħen, u l-W flok il-U hi xi ħaġa ta' zmien ieħor. Fil-fatt min jaġġorna ruħu billi jixtri kotba bil-Malti (dawk tajbin, tipo Trevor Zahra, Claire Azzopardi, Pierre Mejlak) jinduna li m'għadhomx jintużaw.

Eż : tazza ilma
żjara importanti
mara irrabjata
Pawlu u Anna

Dawn kollha huma tajbin, u l-ebda vokali ma taqa' jew tinbidel.

Today's homework

Sorry I haven't blogged for a few days, I was very busy with some stuff going on at school and at home it is virtually impossible, as I have 'some' decoration going on...

So... today's homework is on Maths 2.

Exercise 1 is pretty straight forward, children have to circle the smallest number and underline the largest number.

Exercise 2, they have to arrange the group of numbers from smallest- largest.

Exercise 3, they have to insert two 'in between' numbers

for example

18 33 40 45

Children have to insert a number larger than 18 and smaller than 45.

Today's Work.

Today we did the present continuous.

I am walking

You are talking

He
She is sleeping
It

We
You are writing.

Also note that when there is a vowel before the last consonant, the last consonant gets doubled before adding -ing.

ex :
run - running
swim - swimming

And when the verb ends with an e, this gets dropped before the ing is added on.

wake
They are waking.

Next Monday I'll be giving them a test on the quarter past and quarter to clocks.

English :

Way Ahead Pupil's Book pg 79. Tico's Game. All 15 questions should be answered in full on the English Writing/comprehension tomorrow.

Please DO have a look at your children's work.

Today I also gave them a revision exercise in class, without much help.

Last Term.

This is our last term together. I will emphasise more on corrections, keeping time during school work, giving marks, more compositions and comprehensions and writing in cursive.

Next year you will find Year four to be tougher, so I will try to gear up children as much as possible. Behaviour permitting of course.

Today's Homework.

Malti taħrig il-Fehem. Aqra Denfil.
Studjaw il-Kollettivi fuq Malti Studju. Ħendawt tal-Kollettivi.
Maths 3.

Next week we shall be doing clocks. Quarter past and quarter to. Would be good if you visited this site and others similar to it.

Teaching the Time.

Tinsewx ittuhom il-lunch u 2 fliexken ilma. Żarbun tal-PE. Żraben tat-tappini mhumiex aċċettati. Min għadu ma ħallasx jista’ jibgħat € 2, u nota li jħalli lit-tifel/tifla tiġi l-iSports Day.
