Thank-you

To all the lovely mummies and daddies who came to parents' evening.

Keep up the good work :)

The George Cross

Today we had a handout about the Maltese Flag. I wanted to explain to the children how the George Cross came along, so I showed them some of this video. Would be nice if some great grand parents spoke to the children about the Great War.

Some mashcams

Today we had some people visiting our children so we didn't do any formal lessons.

We sure did learn a lot though!

We had the computers all day and we went on

educationcity.com and played some science, language and maths games.

We also went on purplemash, designed a few cars and buildings for a future project, and we wrote a few stories. Here are some of them.

As time goes by, children are learning to become more independent. There is always some sort of computer activity going on in our class.

Farmer Duck : Certificates, Comic Strips, Wanted Posters and Much more.

Boy, did they work hard today! They were all like little Farmer Ducks (see the story in the yesterday's post), some even putting 5 pieces of work.

After that, the children who were ready explored more bits form the fantastic 2Simple Software.

(we're painting now Miss, we wrote too much today!)

 The .swf Books.

Farmer Duck

Today we read this story. The children enjoyed it immensely...had a few giggles while reading it.

Tomorrow, we're going to do a few posters and comic strips on the Intel Classmates...so watch this space for some fantastic posters and comic strips.

Like and Don't like

At the moment we are doing Unit 3 from Way Ahead.

Here's how it works.

If you like apples and bananas, you say

I like apples and bananas.

If you like apples, but don't like bananas you say

I like apples but I don't like bananas.

If you don't like any of them you say

I don't like apples or bananas.

Nomi.

Agħfas hawn.

(Ħajr lil Mrs. Barbara, għax dak il- PPT hu xogħolha)

Colours.

In year three, children are expected to spell all the colour words properly, in English and in Maltese.

Here is a good game that will help them to spell the colour words.

Happy pumpkins and spiders

Happy faces too!

Pupil Profiles

Today, we went on Purplemash.com and we wrote in our profiles.

It was good fun.

Thankyou for being good during the computer lesson.

Two lovely girls finished a bit early, so they had the time to  explore purplemash a bit more. Here is what they did.

Angela the fairy princess

Shanaia the fairy princess

Things you can do on Purplemash.com

Every day I'm going to show the class a different activity. Today I showed them the Maths games (since they are all convinced that Maths is just awesome). One can also explore, which is great :)

Here's what Ranya did on 2animate light. This .gif picture can be inserted into a story.

Explore, practise, save on your 'cloud' online. Discovering on your own is the best thing you'll ever do.

More Halloween Stories

Today we had an impromptu purplemash.com lesson, for testing purposes, but that did not mean that we didn't use the short time we had with the netbooks to the full.

More scary stuff!

How to use Purplemash.com

Today, in your diaries, you have the logins written down. Tomorrow I'll give you a login card so you can keep it safe.

So...just a reminder on how to login to purplemash.com

Also, you can check the 'online docs' section and show the people at home what you have been doing in class!

Enjoy xx Miss C

The Maths corner

Each week I have been adding activities to the Maths corner. Soon I'm going to add scales and capacity jugs so the children can investigate practical maths. This is important for when they have to deal with Maths problems later on in older classes. It is also important that children participate in weighing activities (when cooking for example) or helping you measure things around the house. The more they can see that Maths is not a subject alien from real life, the quicker they will grasp concepts. This is the whole scope of these activities.

I am very proud the children are keeping the corner tidy. They love their snakes and ladders games, the measuring activities, the dice games and the whiteboards. Today I showed them how the addition/subtraction dominoes work too.

Here are some pictures of my cuties having fun (really) doing Maths.

a) Be afraid...be very afraid. b) First Game design

So today, we went on purplemash.com, and using the teacher's login (children will have their own usernames and passwords on Monday- serious F.U.N, seriously) we used what is known as the 'mashcam.
We had loads of fun doing this activity.
ICT Aims : Using the internet to find a webpage (this was peanuts for my children...just awesome)
          Finding the right activity
          Using camera
Resizing font so that all the text fits into a window
Language Aims : Usage of adjectives, writing in the first person, use of humour, adapting a given text to make it one's own.

And here they are (brace yourselves, things might get a bit horrible)

We had to put some machines on charge, so we went out for a much-needed P.E lesson and a run in the fresh air of the yard. We played onġionġella too, to keep in the worms, spiders and squashed rats theme. Back in class, the children created their own .swf games. Here is the box.com link to them. They had to choose the colours, those who had difficulty in spelling the colour names had to look them up. Different tools were used. Some children even imported the cover picture of the cards. They also had to save their work on their drives. Find your games in this album here. Please click on the first one, then hit the left/right arrow until you find yours x

Enjoy your weekend. I have a throat to rest. Don't make it work so hard next week.

x miss C

Thank-you and well-done!

A big thanks to all my pupils today, you really worked hard. Today we finished a book 'Otto's family'. All of you took great care to write lovely sentences. In Maths, I can see most of you now are counting back without the use of the number-grid. Great work!

Also, you wrote the Maltese comprehension without much huffing and groaning. That was refreshing.

So here...I can't give you any sweets because of our healthy eating policy, but you can share these amongst yourselves :D

The ones who are extra good, for a long period of time, will be borrowing my constructa-bot car to take home and (please) bring back the next day for someone else. Today two very good boys borrowed it, let's see who gets it tomorrow.

Monsters and Dinosaurs

This story had to be done last week.

First we read the book and listened to the story here

We should have done more work on this story, but we wrote about it on our Literacy project book and stuck pictures and what-not.

Today the pupils transformed themselves into monsters and then they wrote stories from the monster's point of view.

To keep in theme, we did some dinosaur Maths. Children had to work out the subtraction sum and then they had to colour accordingly.

More skills on our Intel Classmate netbooks

Here we learn more skills on the Intel Classmate. Today we get the hang of the flip-monitor and the pen, thus using the netbook as a tablet to draw. We also learn a bit more about saving our work, and about sizing our font. Language skill : Choosing one's 'likes' and finding the word from a big word list on Way Ahead, using the ABC (alphabetical order) skills we learnt this week.

Our first ICT lesson. (a big YAY!)

So today we met our Intel Classmates for the first time. We had an hour's lesson and in it we learnt a few basic skills such as:

Logging on the computer

Using the start button to find the right program

Opening the programme (we used 2Publish+ from 2Simple Software)

Using the camera to take a photo

Writing using the keyboard, use of shift key and space bar

Saving our work as 2pp and .png on our usb drives

Here are my beautiful children. There are a few missing, these will be uploaded tomorrow. Thanks for watching, glad our first lesson went well.
